Legacy Gifts

Thank you for considering the Thunder Bay Public Library as part of your estate plan. A well-planned Will benefits you, your family, and the charities you care about, and is an investment in the future of our city.

A gift in your Will or a bequest is the simplest way to make a future gift in support of Thunder Bay Public Library and is also a wonderful way for you to leave a lasting personal legacy. You can leave a specific sum of money or property, or a portion of the residue of your estate.

Here are two simple ways that you can put a charitable gift in your Will.

  1. You can name the residue of your Estate in whole or as a proportion using percentages.  The residue is what remains after taxes, administrative expenses and your heirs have received their specific gifts or proportion.  An advantage is that as your circumstances change, your Will does not have to be altered, as the proportion remains the same.
Sample wording:  “I bequeath the residue of my Estate (or _______% of the residue of my Estate) to Thunder Bay Public Library.”
  2. Another way is to name a specific amount.
Sample wording:  “I give $_____________ to support the work of Thunder Bay Public Library.”

Considerations for Specific Designations

If you wish to designate your gift to a specific program, we recommend the following wording in order to ensure your legacy is realized, should that program no longer be in existence at the time the bequest is realized:

“If through the passage of time, a designated program is no longer in place, I give permission to alter the terms of my Will to adhere as closely as possible to my original wishes; or in the event that this is not possible, please direct my gift to the area of greatest need.”

The name you should include when making a gift by will is “Thunder Bay Public Library Board”. Our Charitable Business Number is 119259075 RR 0001. Our address is 285 Red River Rd., Thunder Bay, ON, P7B 1A9

Thunder Bay Public Library recommends that you consult a legal advisor when planning your Will.

Gifts of Stocks and Securities

Do you hold securities that have increased in value in recent years? Did you know that when you donate them directly to Thunder Bay Public Library, you don’t have to pay capital gains tax and you’re able to give the full value of your securities?

If you donate your shares directly to your Library, TBPL receives a larger donation and you receive an official receipt showing the full amount of the value on the day the stock was sold. This means a considerable tax benefit for you and a larger donation for Thunder Bay Public Library!

We welcome the opportunity to work with you, your family and/or your financial advisor to create a legacy gift tailored to your unique needs and wishes. Our Associate Director of Development would be pleased to speak with you confidentially.
